Doran served with the AAF 4th Mapping Squadron in 1942 during training, thence to the 1st Mapping Group as Geodetic Control Officer operating within and without the continental limits of the United States, and then on to the 311th Air Photo Reconnaissance Wing as Geodetic Control Officer. He served in Labrador, South America, and China.
