George Hartnell, for 33 years a magnetician with this Bureau, retired March 31, 1941, after interesting ceremonies at Cheltenham, Maryland, attended by some 75 friends, at which he was presented with a typewriter.

Born in Bergen, New York, where he received his early education, he started his service with the Survey in May 1908. He was in charge of the Bureau's magnetic observatory at Vieques, P. R., from 1908 to 1911; and directed the work of the base magnetic observatory at Cheltenham, Maryland, from 1911 to 1934. For the past 7 years, he has devoted full time to research projects which had been planned but only partially developed during previous assignments.

Mr. Hartnell is the author of a number of Bureau publications and has published many articles in scientific journals. He expects to return to his old home in Wyoming, New York., where he plans to complete several important papers.
