MATCHLESS
Coast and Geodetic Survey Schooner MATCHLESS. In service 1885-1919. Only known picture of Coast and Geodetic Survey sailing vessel under sail.

Schooner, length 99.6 feet, beam 24.9 feet, draft 7.6 feet. Built in 1859 in Key West, Florida. Acquired by Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1885. Rebuilt in 1895 at a cost of approximately $50,000. This ship was the last sailing vessel to be owned and operated by the Coast and Geodetic Survey. In service1885-1915. Source of name unclear. Perhaps strictly descriptive.
