Coast and Geodetic Survey Ship EAGRE.

Schooner, length 140 feet, beam 30.3 feet, draft 7.5 feet. Built by Van Dusen at Williamsburg, New York in 1875 as the yacht MOHAWK, the largest yacht of its class in the New York Yacht Club. Its owner, William T. Garner, and family drowned in July 1876 when the vessel was caught in a fast moving squall with all sails set. After recovery of the yacht, the Coast and Geodetic Survey acquired it in 1878 for $19,905.78 and renamed it EAGRE, meaning a tidal bore. In service 1878-1903. Atlantic service only.

Publication of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NOAA Central Library.
