1902. By one account, rebuilt A. D. BACHE. In Navy service from 1917-1919.
Primarily Atlantic service. Sold April 30, 1927. Named for Alexander
Dallas Bache (1806-1867), second Superintendent of the Coast Survey,
at various times served as President of the American Association for
Advancement of Science and President of American Philosophical Society;
an incorporator and regent of the Smithsonian Institution; a founder
and first President of the National Academy of Sciences; Vice President
of the American Sanitary Commission, a forerunner of the American
Red Cross, during the Civil War; and recipient of many awards from
foreign governments and scientific societies for his guidance of the
Coast Survey.
