for Bronze Star Medal
THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
WASHINGTON
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting
the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to LIEUTENANT NORMAN PORTER, UNITED
STATES COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY for service as set forth
in the following CITATION: |

"For meritorious
achievement as Mapping Officer on the Staff of the FIRST Marine
Amphibious Corps from October 15, 1942, to April 1, 1944; the
THIRD Amphibious Corps from April 1, 1944, to March 6, 1945;
and the FIFTH Amphibious Corps from April 25 to August 20, 1945.
Working indefatigably throughout this period, Lieutenant Porter
obtained mapping and hydrographic data without which accurate
charts could not have been made. While attached to the FIFTH
Amphibious Corps , he demonstrated his high technical intelligence
in assisting in the planning for three major campaigns and was
charged with the complete responsibility of arranging for and
carrying out the overall mapping for the corps and higher Naval
activities. He participated in the operations at Bougainville
and Guam. By his skill, devotion to duty, and courage while
under fire while participating in the operations at Bougainville
and Guam, Lieutenant Porter contributed materially to the success
of these vital campaigns."
Lieutenant
Porter is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
