MILLER J. TONKEL Citation for Bronze Star Medal The President of the United States takes pleasure in awarding the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to LIEUTENANT, JUNIOR GRADE, MILLER J. TONKEL UNITED STATES COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY for service as set forth in the following CITATION: "For meritorious service in connection with operations to effect the formal surrender of the enemy in Tientsin Area, China, while serving as Survey Officer in the FIRST Marine Division, ELEVENTH Marines, from October 1 to December 28, 1945. Displaying exceptional ability , Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Tonkel was instrumental in rapidly effecting repairs for billets and in providing utilities required during a critical period when adverse weather seriously threatened the health and morale of the regiment. By his outstanding professional skill, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Tonkel contributed materially to the successful completion of the regiment's mission and his devotion to duty was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
