CITATION: 

"For meritorious achievement as survey and meteorological officer of a Marine artillery regiment on SAIPAN, MARIANAS ISLANDS, from 15 June to 9 July 1944. Comdr. Morton, immediately upon landing and while under heavy enemy shellfire, surveyed in the artillery positions and checked the accuracy of the map being used as an artillery fire chart. In extending this survey forward he repeatedly came under heavy mortar and rifle fire. His outstanding service was of inestimable value to the entire operation and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
