The
Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in commending
LIEUTENANT
COMMANDER DANIEL E. WHELAN, JR.
UNITED
STATES COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY, RETIRED
for
service as set forth in the following CITATION:
"For
outstanding performance of duty as Deperming and Degaussing
Officer at the Office of the Assistant Industrial Manager,
San Francisco, from October 1943 until the cessation of
hostilities. Displaying marked initiative and diligence,
Lieutenant Commander Whelan handled his important assignment
with sound judgment and skill, reducing both time and
cost involved in degaussing and deperming activities by
as much as forty per cent. His executive and professional
ability were of material aid in the speedy repair of battle-damaged
vessels and in routine overhauls, and his noteworthy accomplishments
reflect the highest credit upon Commander Whelan and the
United States Naval Service."
