CITATION
BRONZE
STAR MEDAL
Major
CHARLES A. SCHANCK K100034, Field Artillery (United States
Coast and Geodetic Survey), Headquarters, 288th Field
Artillery Observation Battalion, United States Army. For
meritorious service in connection with military operations
against an enemy of the United States in Luxembourg and
Belgium from 22 December 1944 to 27 January 1945. As Battalion
Survey Officer, Major Schanck so directed and executed
the installation of survey control for the artillery units
of the III Corps as to meet the most exacting requirements
for speed and accuracy. His insistence on keeping his
survey well ahead of the guns often led him to positions
among front line infantry units where he came under enemy
small arms fire. His technical skill and courageous aggressiveness
were a real contribution to the effectiveness of the entire
III Corps artillery. The outstanding achievements of Major
Schanck won him the praise of all artillery commanders
and are exemplary of the highest traditions of the armed
forces of the United States.
