Captain Harry D. Reed, Jr.,
Operations Officer at the Coast and Geodetic Survey's Atlantic
Marine
Center for the past year, retired on January 1, 1968. A 1933 graduate
of The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina, he entered on duty
with the Coast and Geodetic Survey as a deck officer in 1940.
He was transferred to the U.S. Army in January 1944, and served
in Europe as survey officer of an artillery observation battalion,
returning to the Coast and Geodetic Survey in January 1946.
Captain Reed served for more than 15 years on various Coast
and Geodetic Survey ships, and commanded the JONES, PATTON,
and HYDROGRAPHER. He was District Officer in New Orleans from
1962 until 1965.
Captain and Mrs. Reed expect to remain in the Norfolk area temporarily.
