Francis
G. Engle,
NOAA
(retired) passed away on June 6, 1974, at the age of 86. Commander
Engle entered the Coast and Geodetic Survey as an Aid on February
2, 1907. His long and varied career included command of the
PATHFINDER, RESEARCH, HYDROGRAPHER, BACHE, SURVEYOR, NATOMA,
LYDONIA, and DISCOVERER. During World War I he was transferred
to the service and jurisdiction of the Navy during which time
he commanded the BACHE. He retired on October 1, 1937, with
almost 32 years of service. Commander Engle returned to active
duty during World Was II and re-retired on July 1, 1943.
