The
art of the Coast Surveyors reflected their work and
their lives. Sometimes the art was official views of the coast, signals
built for geodesy and hydrography, and even engineering drawings of
precision instruments. Sometimes the art captured the work of observing,
camping, and packing, or the beautiful little ships of the Coast Survey
underway, sometimes anchored, or sometimes posed such that the whole
side view of a vessel would be shown in a line drawing. Sometimes
the art was just for the sake of art and capturing a beautiful scene
that otherwise would be lost forever.
